| Born in the family home at 1215-87th Ave. Oakland, CA. His mother cooked with a wood burning stove that also served as their heater. His father was a metal moulder. He was only 7 when his father died of a heart attack, and he has only vague memories of him. A few years later at the age of 13, he lost his mother. He does remember that she loved to cook, and relates a story of her chasing him with a broom after she caught him smoking when he was 12. He and his sisters, Evelyn and Alvera remained in the family home, the older siblings were already on their own. He would go to school and work at a gas station to help with finances. His sisters also had jobs. He finished High School, graduating from Castlemont in Oakland in January 1940. The following January, 1942, he joined the Marines. |
