Gerald Delano Taylor was from Portland,
Oregon where he had gone to High School
in Portland.  He had been in Concord, CA for
about 7 months prior to the kidnaping. Then
after the Oakland attack he found his way back
up to Oregon where he abducted two girls who
he brutally assaulted .  They  identifed him to police
by photos. His parent's, who described him as
having a violent temper, lived in Portland and their
phone was tapped.  Gerald placed a call to them
saying he was trapped and would, either kill
himself or shoot his way out".  The call was
traced to a phone booth near a motel.  In the
meantime, he was also suspected of robberies
in the Seattle area, prior to the call.  He was
eventually picked up at a Motel in Hood River, Oregon.

"Oakland Police Inspector, Jack Froeming,
after a face to face interview with Taylor, generally admitted
the kidnaping and brutal assault.  Taylor showed not much,
if any, remorse for his crimes, said Froeming" .
Taylor was
sent back to Oakland where he was tried and convicted.

Over the years, the career of Jack Froeming was seen many times in the
Oakland, Tribune.  From his near death experiences, to his capturing many
horrible criminals, and the many letters to him for his great work, from victims
and the police department.  He was involved in riots, serial killers, rapists,
kidnapers and more.  But through his career he never brought this influence
into his home.  Cases were never discussed.  He tried to shield his family
from the horrors of his work.  Foul language was never used.  To him, work
was work and it stayed there, home was home and was to be protected.
He eventually retired in 1971 after years in pain from a back injury which
happened while jumping a fence while in pursuit of an attacker.

But retirement wasn't in his vocabulary.  His next venture was to run for
Sheriff of Alameda County.  Being part of a political campaign was very
exciting.  He had the support of many well know politicians, however, he
did not win the election.

It was probably for the better, because it was during this time his wife,
Virginia was diagnosed with breast cancer.  It was a long fight which she did
not win.  She eventually passed away on Dec 13, 1980.
Jack passed away Sep 18, 1991 at the age of 71.  Services were at
St. Joseph Basilica Catholic Church in Alameda, CA.  Burial at St. Marys
Cemetery, 4529 Howe St., Oakland, CA
